My name is José Manuel Flores Garcia I am twenty four years old I live with my wife Iris yanira Alvarez and I work as a Spanish and English teacher I live in los Angeles Ometepe island, Nicaragua.
I come from a big family as usual in Nicaragua I have seven brothers and eleven sisters we grew up swimming and fishing in the big lake of Nicaragua called cocibolca, I also studied English at the university.
My family loves music I personally play the guitar for a small musical group in my church. by the way I go to a small church called iglesia apostolica (apostolic church) where every other night we go to sing and pray.
Well it is a small part of my life but I am preparing to write a number of articles trying to answer all of your questions about retiring in Nicaragua.
This is only and introduction of the first articles that I am going to write about Nicaragua and specially ometepe island,Weather, economy, activities, (agriculture, cattle, fish, craft,) crime and politics.
Weather.
The climate in ometepe island is really, really nice. it is absolutely amazing,Nicaragua is like a belt in Central America in one side is the Pacific Ocean and at the other side on the west the Caribbean sea so you can feel the smooth wind that come from the Caribbean in a temperature of 28 degrees Celsius and in the highest temperature is 33 degrees Celsius, But something better is that the pacific is not in hurricanes zone but the Caribbean is.
There are two seasons in Nicaragua 1.winter 2. Summer.
Winter is from November to April and Summer is from May to October in both of them you can enjoy a peaceful temperature that does not vary by 4 degrees one way or another.
Ometepe Island is surrounded by lake water that cools the air before it gets to the island giving you a cool breeze.
In the evening with this cool breeze you can sit out on your veranda and enjoy a beautiful sunset,Weather is perfect for vegetables fruits, tropical plants and trees.
Economy
To live in Nicaragua it is more economically fisible compared to the rest of the world, due to the low price of food, electricity, water and taxes.
That attracted many people from around the world a couple can live comfortably for less than $ 700 a month.
Example: 1 pound of chicken $ 1.00, 1 pound of pork $ 1.50, 1 pound of beef $ 1.60, 1 pound of rice $ 0.40, 1 pound of beans $ 1.60.
Activities.
People on the island are dedicated to several activities such as agriculture, livestock, fishing, craft and some international trade.
Agriculture.
The main products that are grown on the island are corn, rice, Beans, wheat, watermelon, plantains,
tomatoes, cabbage, avocado, carrots, orange, coffee, and some tobacco's fields which are grown under the breeze of maderas and Concepcion volcanoes and at the side of the big lake you can buy all of these products at the closer store or at the producer's house nearby. These are fresh and generic products giving them a delicious, natural flavor.
The livestock
the raising of cows, horses, goats, pigs and chicken are the principal but not less important than the agriculture it is part of the daily life of many people on the island because their living depends on the production of milk products, sales of some of these animals and some of them are used in the Agriculture work as is the case of the horses and oxes for the preparation of the fields before the planting. Many pigs, cows, and chicken are bought by local butchers the meat contains no additives the vegetables contain no pesticides so you can buy fresh and at a good price.
Fishing
Since past centuries people have been doing this activity taking advantage of the beaches that surround all the island that's why we can find artisan fishermen all around the island who have improved their tactics of hunting increasing their production due to the beaches of the island has a lot of food for fish during all the year.
Taking advantage of this fishery you can get more varieties of fish such as guapote, mojarra, saltona, robalo, gaspar, sabalo real, roncador and tilapia, this last one (tilapia) has caused a big interest from national and international people that s why local people with international help ship this fish to other countries for a better price moreover, the main dish in restaurants in ometepe is fish.
Crime
Crime on Ometepe Island is virtually non existent, the children are safe to run the streets any time of day or night, you never hear a siren, the police only have bicycles.
